I remember the day we decided to homeschool ever so clearly. It all began with a phone call. See, I was in Vegas for yet another conference away from my family. I was overseeing cardiac research at a large healthcare system in Florida and my days were LONG. I would often come home exhausted trying to make it until bedtime and get ready to do it all over again. I remember calling my husband and telling him how much I miss him and the girls. I also felt compelled to tell him that I wanted to stay home and be with the girls to which he responded “ ok, let’s do it”. I could not sleep that night from the excitement and the possibility of being able to be home with my girls full time. However, the excitement was short lived as concerns about finances and giving up my career flooded my mind. Mike and I decided to look at options including leaving our girls in the absolutely wonderful private school they were currently attending. The numbers were not adding up as quitting my job would leave us with a significant financial deficit. We then looked at our public school system. Well, that was short lived as the schools in our area were just not a good option at the time. This is when we thought: “ well, how about homeschooling our girls?”. Honestly, the thought of doing that was absolutely terrifying! Complete horror! After the initial shock, I began to do some research (actually LOTS of research). We signed up for our first homeschool convention. There, we were incredibly encouraged and were exposed to what seemed to be never ending options of resources and curriculums. We were on cloud nine and the Lord so sweetly and clearly confirmed to us that this indeed was what we were called to do for this season. This is when our homeschool journey began! I did continue to work part time outside of the house while I homeschooled my girls. It took lots of organization, structure and determination but I am here to tell you that it can be done. We did it and continue to do this homeschool thing! We take one year at a time and some days ( more often than not ;)) one hour at a time :).
So you may wonder, why did I choose to begin this consulting business? It is simple! I had access to infinite amounts of information and resources but most importantly I had a mentor. This mentor provided me information and all the necessary tools that enabled me to navigate during my first year of homeschooling our girls successfully. This support was truly priceless and I want to be able to provide families with the same kind of support I was blessed with.
